2008 Brakeman and Engineer Familiarization Training

February 16 & 17

Listed below is the 2007 information

A training course to become certified as a brakeman trainee or engineer trainee at the Indiana Railway Museum has been scheduled for the 16 & 17 of  February 2008.  This training session will include classes on railroad safety, railroad rulebook, basic switching skills, brakeman and engineer familiarization.  After completing this course a new trainee should be able to work as a brakeman or engineer under the supervision of another fully certified brakeman or engineer.

Classes will take place at French Lick in both the classroom and onboard the train.  Information will be emailed to registered participants prior to the class detailing the times and specific location of classes.

Attendance at both days of training is required.

To attend this course:

  • RSVP by February 12, 2007 to info@indianarailwaymuseum.org or call 1-800-74-TRAIN.

  • Become a member of the Indiana Railway Museum.

  • Be at least 14 years old (full certification may not be obtained until age 18, but younger volunteers may continue to serve as trainees operating under the supervision of fully certified brakeman or engineer)

  • Participants should bring a bag lunch on the second day.

In order to have successfully completed this course participants must:

  • Attend all days of training.

  • Successfully pass safety and rule book tests.

  • Demonstrate to the instructors an ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of a brakeman or engineer under the supervision of another fully certified brakeman or engineer. (This is completely dependant on the individual and how often they work throughout the season with trained instructors as well as how quickly they master the required skills)

PLEASE NOTE:

To become fully certified and operate without supervision, the trainee will need to schedule days when trains are operating to come and train under the  supervision of an instructor.  Trainees will need to become certified as a brakeman prior to continuing their training as an engineer.  To become certified as a brakeman generally takes about 10 weekend days (a full Saturday or Sunday).  The trainee may then begin training as an engineer.  It generally  takes a minimum of one full season (April-October), attending at least 2 weekend days per month, to become certified as an engineer, but it can take longer.

Those interested in this course should realize that to become a fully certified engineer could take as long as 2-3 operating seasons depending on the amount of time they put into learning the craft, as well as how well they master the required skills.  The skill level is set to a very high standard as the engineer is responsible for the safety of the passengers aboard the train and no compromises will be made to the standards which must be met.
