PIZZA TRAIN

School groups may also elect to take advantage of the Museum's PIZZA TRAIN option.  When the group selects this option, each person receives:  2 slices of pizza, a bag of chips & a choice of beverage all while riding on board their one hour train trip.  The pizza may also be saved until the end of the trip and eaten in our picnic area.

PICNIC AREA

The Museum has several picnic tables (most under a roof) available to groups at no additional charge.  These tables can seat approximately 40-60 people.  Groups can bring their own lunch or take advantage of our pizza train.

RAILROAD MUSEUM STORE

Before or after your trip, allow time for your students to visit the Museum Store.  Our store features a wide range of railroad related products such as videos and DVDs, books for children (both young and old) toys, postcards, and much, much more.  All of the purchases are collected by the staff, 'tagged and bagged' then turned over to the teachers for distribution after the class returns to school.  This practice eliminates the loss of purchases or disagreements on the ride back to school.  To preview some of the items available, visit our store online.

Please call Teresa at 1-800-74-TRAIN for more details or to book your class for one of the dates above.  You may also email museumstore@indianarailwaymuseum.org.

RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS

The following links provide information on topics that can help teachers relate a trip to the Indiana Railway Museum to the classroom.

- Railroads helped to shape the United States in many ways.  It fundamentally changed the way in which people traveled and was the catalyst that helped create the modern idea of tourism and vacationing in North America.  Railroads also changed the way in which wars were fought, and helped to tie the east and west together allowing for the rapid westward expansion of U.S.

Visit the Library of Congress's American Memory Project to download maps and other images related to the above topics and more.

 - What time is it?  The Franklin Institute teaches students about the development of the time zone and the relationships that the railroad had in the development process.  The site also provides activities for students and additional resources for those activities.

- PBS American Experience.  PBS provides an online companion to their show on the Transcontinental Railroad.  This guide provides information to teach subjects such as history, civics, economics and geography using the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad as the backdrop.  The information on the site can be used by itself or in conjunction with the video available from PBS.
