FAQ

What time do your trains run?  Trains run at 10am, 1 & 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays between the months of April and October.  During November trains run at 1pm only on Saturday and Sunday.  Between June and October trains also run on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1pm.  The museum does operate trains on Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day at 10am 1 & 4 pm.

Is the Museum open even if the train is not scheduled to operate?  Yes the museum is open throughout the week from 8am until 4pm Monday through Friday  year-round and on weekends April through October from 10am until 6pm.  In the month of November the weekend hours are from 11am until 3pm.  The Museum Store is also open during these hours.

Does my child need a car seat?  It is not necessary to bring car seats for children.

Are there bathrooms on the train?  Yes there are bathrooms located on the train, as well as at the halfway point in Cuzco.

What is there to do in Cuzco?  The train is in Cuzco for only about 10 minutes in order to provide an opportunity to use the restrooms, stretch your legs and give the crew time to prepare the train for its return trip to French Lick.

How long is the trip?  The trip is 20 miles round trip with a short 10 minute stop in Cuzco.  It takes approximately 2 hours (slightly longer on robbery weekends)

Are the trips steam or diesel powered?  Currently all trips are powered by diesel locomotives.

Are the robberies suitable for young children?  The robberies are comparable to watching an old western movie on television.  There are loud noises from black powder pistols, a staged gun battle, and horses.

What time zone does the Museum follow?  The museum is on Eastern Time all year round.  The Museum does observe Daylight Savings Time.  Please call prior to your trip if you are unsure of the local time zone in French Lick.

Are food and drink available on the train?  Yes.  Drinks and snacks (i.e. popcorn, cookies, candy bars, crackers, etc...) are available on the train. Hot dogs, popcorn and drinks are available in the Museum Store.

How soon before departure time should I arrive?  It is recommended that you arrive at least 10 minutes before departure.  On holiday or robbery weekends, as wells as Tuesday trips, you may want to arrive 20 minutes before departure.

Can I make reservations?  In some instances, Yes.  Please see our Advance Tickets page for more details.

Does the train have heating and air conditioning?  The train does have heat during the cooler months.  It does not feature air conditioning.  It does have windows at every seat.

What credit cards does the Museum accept?  The Museum currently accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.  The Museum does not have a debit card feature offering cash back.  ATMs are located only a short distance from the Museum.

Does the Museum accept personal checks?    The Museum does not accept personal checks for fares or for purchases in the museum store.  Group reservations made in advance may be paid using a personal check.  For further questions contact Teresa at 1-800-74-TRAIN.

Is there a gift shop?  Yes the Museum does have a Museum Store featuring a variety of items.  A small portion of what is offered is viewable online at our Museum Store page.

Can I become a member of the Indiana Railway Museum?  Yes.  Please see our Membership page for more information.

Does the Museum run trains from French Lick to Jasper?  At this time the excursion trains run only from French Lick to Cuzco.  It is possible that at some time in the future trains may run as far south as Jasper and Huntingburg, but no timeline has currently been developed as to when that may happen. 

Can I smoke onboard the train?  No.  Smoking is not permitted on the train, however during the stop at Cuzco, smoking is permitted outside of the train.

Is there a picnic area near the Museum?  Yes.  The Museum has several picnic tables that are available for use by our visitors.  Most of these are under a roof.  Use of these tables is on a first come - first served basis.
